The Effect of Socioeconomic Status on the Prevalence of Chronic Disease in the Elderly: Focusing on Nutrient Intake
Kim Min-Ji

Lim Jae-Young
Abstract
The study examines the effects of nutrition intake of older Koreans of different socioeconomic statuses on the probability of their having a chronic disease. The analytical model was divided into two main categories. The first model analyzed the causal relationship between nutrition and socioeconomic characteristics, and the second one analyzed the effect of nutrition intakes on the probability of having a chronic disease, based on the results derived from the analysis of the first model. The data were analyzed using an ordered logit model and a binary logit model with STATA 14.0. The results show that nutrition intakes are strongly correlated with socioeconomic status in the elderly and might, in turn, affect the probability of having a chronic disease. The results of this study could be used as a rationale for establishing policies for promoting health equality among the elderly.
